Nominet, the .uk Registry has been chosen to apply for two new Domain Name extensions, with the support of the Welsh Government.
.cymru & .wales are only the first of many new Domain Name extensions that may be available from 2013 for the registration of Domain Names. It follows a decision by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to increase competition and choice and expand dramatically the number of top-level names available, such as ‘.com’, ‘.net’ and ‘.org’.
You may have already read about some of the other new ‘potential’ extensions, such as .london, .paris, .shop, .hotel, .music, .sport, .eco, .bank ?
The Domain Name world is on the verge of the biggest change it has ever seen, it will be 2013 (at the earliest) before we see any of the ‘new extensions’ live and available for registration. Only then, will we be able to explain any registration rules and requirements and provide advice on which (if any) would be relevant to you or your business.
