Online shopping set to rise again in 2012

The end of 2011 saw strong e-retail figures in the UK with a rise of 16.5% on the previous year.  John Lewis and M & S reported a huge increase in online spend from their websites, with ecommerce sales rising by more than 27% and 22% respectively. Promising figures were also reported in Europe as online sales across the continent rose 18 per cent with Germany, Switzerland and Norway seeing the highest online retail market shares.

Boxing Day 2011 was named the ‘biggest ever’ online shopping day in the UK, up 19.5% compared to 2010. For 2012 the latest study from Logan Tod & Co, suggests that 26 per cent of online shoppers are planning to spend even more money on the internet next December.

Kelkoo predicts a similar increase this year, well above the expected 3.65% rise in total retail sales, forecasting that the UK will satisfy its shopping urges online to the tune of £56.5bn. Furthermore, with a rise in the number of people using iPads, tablets and mobile phones to browse and make their online purchases, Ecommerce is going from strength to strength.

Chris Simpson Chief Marketing Officer at Kelkoo said “Over the last five years internet retailing has improved substantially thanks to the use of affordable ‘always-on’ internet connections, simple and secure payment systems and the increasing popularity of mobile devices, combined with the growth of mobile-based retail sites.

“All of these factors should help online retail sales and retail sales via mobile devices to continue to thrive in 2012.” “We predict that British online retailers will enjoy an average rise in online sales of 14% this year.”

In a recent survey, the driving factors encouraging online purchases were said to be: –
– low-cost delivery options 57%
– money-saving offers 48%
– improved payment options 46%
– improved stock availability 45%

Visa Europe reported that ecommerce spending accounted for 22% of all Visa spend in the UK, in the year ending 30th September 2011; growing by more than 40% over that year. They have announced the launch of a new ecommerce digital wallet service in the latter half of the year promising a further rise in online shopping in 2012.
