Celebrities scramble to protect themselves in .XXX

Celebrities worldwide are racing to protect their names in the .XXX domain, to prevent domain forwarding to Adult sites or Adult sites being launched in their name, such as britneyspears.xxx or simoncowell.xxx – a scary thought!

The ICM registry has revealed that around 15,000 domains in the .XXX extension have been reserved. Although they are not releasing the list of names included, some bright sparks have compiled an unofficial list using whois tools.

Famous names from Justin Bieber to Halle Berry; Beyonce to Charlie Sheen, even the likes of Elton John and Piers Morgan are protected. However the list not only includes celebrities, but also names that have been blocked on cultural grounds, including cultural personalities, capital cities and political figures such as Barack Obama and David Cameron.

The inclusion of names reserved in this stage seems to be based on fame rather than sex appeal as the list includes names such as Brad Pitt as well as Donald Trump. This also does not seem to be limited to the living, as names such as amywinehouse.xxx, elvis.xxx and even osamabinladen.xxx have been blocked.

But why can’t these names be blocked and protected during the Sunrise Period? The answer is that Celebrity names do not qualify as trademarks so are not included in this stage. However this does has its advantages as it prevents cybersquatters using their names, leading to lengthy legal battles to recover them.

ICM’s trademark protection period (Sunrise B) will not be open for long; it opened on 7th September and will close on 28th October 2011, so make sure you have your trademark or an exact match TLD protected, before regular registrations begin in December.
