The 1980’s conjure up images of yuppies shouting into mobile phones the size of a brick and some very questionable fashions. At a time when many of us hadn’t even heard of the Internet the .COM extension was born and with it, a revolution that’s changed all of our lives. With .COM reaching its milestone 25th Anniversary this month, Verisign is launching a number of events and initiatives in celebration.
The first .COM domain name was registered back on March 15th 1985 (symbolics.com) and is today owned by domain investor, Aron Meystedt. This first .COM registration ignited the birth of the Internet and the rest as they say is history. Today there are over 80 million .COM domains in registration and still growing rapidly.
Verisign, the 25th anniversary events main sponsor, will lead an industry-wide celebration of those who have shaped and innovated the first 25 years of the Internet, and recognition of those who show the most promise in shaping it for the next 25 years.
The celebrations will kick off with a policy-focused event in Washington DC, on March 16th and will end with a Gala evening in San Francisco on May 26th. Verisign has set up a website documenting the .COM’s timeline of events and showcasing a variety of multimedia content over the coming months. They will also shortly announce the creation of 4 $75,000 research grants to reward the future innovators of the web.
